12 by 1200 hrs?

How about a baker's dozen? Today there were no classes, as it was Chamorro culture day - the culmination of Chamorro culture month. So I dragged my wheel out of the studio, and down to the edge of the courtyard to do some demos for the festivities. It was so nice to be able to sit and throw without worrying about time. Managed to pull a couple of yunomi, a couple of sake cups, a bunch of bowls, and even a bottle. Now to get them trimmed and stamped/ carved on Monday.

Something different ...

I needed to do a demo anyway so I decided to do something a little different for their coil demo. Looks a little strange, but turned out ok. Just need to stamp a design on it.

Tomorrow I get to spend the day doing wheel demos ... can't wait!

Books!

This school year, there have been a number of Japanese high school students who came over to spend a couple of days touring our high schools. While in my classroom, I let them play with some clay, and gave them each a piece of student work left over from last year (not collected by their owners). I also presented the Principal of each group with a piece of my work. Last week two students from the Japanese language class brought me a package from one of these schools:

five books of pottery from museums and collections. Browsing through this one

I came across this great picture

a piece done by none other than

the only non-Japanese in the book. These books have some great ceramic art in them, and my students are getting ideas for projects already.

My work - A little busier this last quarter ...

This shelf is what's left over from last school year - after I lost use of a kiln.

Mostly bowls, a few mugs with (questionable) experimental handles, and a couple of yunomi.

This shelf contains items I have done for class demos this last quarter.

More yunomi, some pinch pots, a couple slab pots, and three decent mugs. Now if I can just find a kiln to fire them all!

Pinch Pots galore

Now if I could only get a kiln!!!! It appears that may not happen this school year, so students may never see their work finished.

Oh well, they are hard at work with their coil projects, now that the pinch pots are on the drying shelves. Here's some shots of the five class shelves ... individual pots to follow - tomorrow.

More student work

Thought I would show some more student work in progress.

Of course, most of the students would rather carve their designs on the pot, rather than use stamps.

Time to decorate!

The students started decorating their pinch pots this week, so I thought a few pictures of them working, as well as my demo pieces, were in order.

Go Fund Me page

In order to raise the funds for my Japan trip in time, I have opened up a "gofundme" page for people to donate to a worthy opportunity.  I hope it works!

Spring cleaning

So I finally got around to straightening out the studio, brought in my old boom box and CDs, and even scrubbed the floor! Now I just need to concentrate on getting more throwing done.

I did get in a little time on the wheel Tuesday, and trimmed yesterday. These six pieces, and

this one. Can't wait To see it fired.

I tried hand carving the foot on this ... Bit of work though to get it to turn out.

Hope to get another six thrown at lunch today.

On another note, thanks to all who are helping my students with their research paper! They are learning - even though they don't want to - about clay and what you can do with it.
